The Science of Paint
We are often asked what type of paint we use and why. We have used different paints over the years and ones that we have had consistent success with are Benjamin Moore ADVANCE Paint and Sherwin Williams Emerald. Benjamin Moore ADVANCE paint is preferred by professional painters because the waterborne alkyd feels like an oil-based paint during application, and it levels to a smooth, factory-like finish that resists chipping and damage. But unlike oil-based paints that yellow over time, water-based paint colors stay true. Sherwin Williams Emerald paint has many of the same great qualities as Benjamin Moore, it acts like an oil based product but is actually water based which keeps clean up easy and is easy on the nose because of the very low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
Here are some frequently asked questions:
- What is the most common paint finish on cabinets? A satin finish is popular for cabinets because it provides a durable, easy-clean surface.
- How many coats of paint do you put on my cabinets? For a professional finish, we apply at least one coat of primer and two coats of paint to provide excellent coverage for most cabinets with more primer and paint if needed depending on the material your cabinets are made
- How long should I wait to put my items back on painted surfaces? Although paint may feel dry to the touch in a few hours, most need time to cure fully. Both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams take 30 days to be completely cured. What does “cured” mean? This means that all the ingredients have had time to harden and this makes a tough layer and difficult to damage after this time. If you do put heavy items on freshly painted surfaces, you run the risk of damaging the paint or leaving impressions in the paint.
- Do you put a top coat on the paint? There is no need for a top coat with either Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams paint. They both have properties that allow the paint to harden without the need of a top coat which will amber over time. These paints provide a smooth finish and keep their beautiful color for years!
- Who should I hire to paint my cabinets? Of course, we want you to hire us but, take your time and do some research. Hire a company that has experience working with cabinetry.
